Audio Trimmer Guide: Cut MP3 and WAV in the Browser
Full walkthrough of the Meme Tap online audio trimmer: drop MP3, WAV, or OGG, mark start and end, preview, then download WAV or MP3 on this device.

The Meme Tap online audio trimmer is a free, in-browser trimmer. Drop an MP3, WAV, or OGG, mark start and end on the waveform, preview the selection, and save WAV or MP3. Decode, cut, and encode run in the tab. The file is not uploaded to a Meme Tap server, and there is no account step.
This is the full guide for that page: how the drop zone, waveform, clocks, and download menu behave, what the 40 MB cap means, and how a cut clip sits next to a soundboard download.
Layout of the tool
The page opens with a tall drop box. Icon and copy sit in the centre. After a file loads, that box shrinks to a Replace audio strip so the waveform board can take the space.
The board shows:
- File name
- File clock (full duration)
- Clip clock (end minus start)
- Interactive waveform with one shaded region
- Start (seconds) and End (seconds) fields, each with a
m:ss.ccreadout - Play clip, Reset, and Download
On a phone the time fields stack, then Play and Reset share a row, with Download full width under them.
Status lines appear above the board when needed: drawing the waveform, encoding WAV or MP3, or an error such as an unsupported type.
Adding a file
Drop a file on the box or click the box to open the picker. Allowed types are MP3, WAV, and OGG (.oga is treated as OGG). Other types show “Use an MP3, WAV, or OGG file.” Files larger than 40 MB show “Keep the file under 40 MB so it can trim in this tab.”
The picker reads a local object URL. That is the in browser trimmer path: nothing is posted for cutting. Get permission before trimming voice notes of other people, and avoid files that cannot be copied.
Replace audio swaps the current file. The old object URL is released. Start and end reset to the new duration.
A message “This browser could not read that file. Try MP3 or WAV.” means the decoder failed. That is common when trying to trim ogg in Safari. Convert first.
Waveform and region
After decode, the page draws a waveform editor view. One region covers the whole file at first. Drag the shaded span to move the clip. Drag the left or right handle to change in or out. The region cannot shrink below 0.05 seconds.
Theme colours follow the site (wave, progress, and region tint).
Clicking the waveform seeks the playhead. Preview still starts at the region start when Play clip is used, not at a random seek.
Loading shows “Drawing the waveform…” until the region is ready. Controls stay disabled until then.
Start and End fields
Start (seconds) and End (seconds) accept numbers to two decimal places. The clocks next to them show m:ss.cc (for example 0:01.25). Typing a value clamps it:
- Start cannot go below
0or past end minus 0.05 s - End cannot pass the file duration
- End is always at least 0.05 s after start
The Clip line is end - start. Dragging the region writes the same numbers the other way, so the handles and the fields stay in sync.
Use the fields when a punchline time is already known. Use the handles when the cut is by ear.
Play, pause, and reset
Play clip plays only the selection, from start to end, then stops. While audio is running the button label becomes Pause. Pause leaves the playhead where it stopped. Play clip again starts at the region start, not from the pause point.
Reset pauses, jumps the playhead to zero, and stretches the region over the full file. It does not clear the upload.
There is no loop or speed control on this audio cutter.
Download: WAV and MP3
Download sits on the board. It stays disabled until the waveform is ready, and again while encode runs. The menu has two rows:
| WAV | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Clean PCM, further edits | Smaller files for chat and timelines |
| How it is made | 16-bit WAV in the tab | 192 kbps MP3 in the tab |
| Filename | original-name-trim.wav | original-name-trim.mp3 |
The source is decoded at full quality, then sliced between start and end. A cut wav from a WAV source is still PCM. A trim mp3 from an MP3 source is a new 192 kbps encode of that slice, not a lossless copy of the original frames.
While encode runs, the page shows “Encoding WAV…” or “Encoding MP3…” and the controls lock. A failed pass shows “Could not export that clip.” or, for MP3, “Could not encode MP3. Try WAV.”
The filename is the original name with unsafe characters turned into hyphens, then -trim and the extension. Example: bruh.mp3 becomes bruh-trim.mp3. Files land in the browser downloads folder. Nothing is stored in a Meme Tap account.
Download mp3 is the smaller option for a meme sound clip that will sit under a still or a short video. WAV is the better pick when the next step is another editor.
Limits and what the tool does not do
- 40 MB cap, enforced in the tab
- Minimum clip 0.05 s
- Formats: MP3, WAV, OGG where the browser can decode
- No fade, noise reduction, volume, or pitch
- No crop of video, no captions, no batch folder
- No cloud library; a refresh clears the session
- No watermark from the trimmer
This tool cut audio online in the sense that the page is on the web. The bytes stay on the device.
Pairing a clip with a soundboard
The trimmer makes a local file. It does not publish to the board. For a ready-made button, browse trending sound buttons or new sound buttons. The meme soundboard and reaction sounds boards group short lines that often sit on the same kind of punchline people cut from a longer take.
A downloaded clip is not a licence. Platform rules and copyright still apply once the file is posted to Discord, TikTok, Reels, or a stream.
School and shared computers: the trimmer runs in the browser and needs no account, so it loads where the site loads. Local network rules still apply. Downloads stay in that device’s downloads folder.
Common mistakes
- Expecting OGG on every phone. Convert to MP3 or WAV when the decoder fails.
- Dropping a 50 MB session file. Cut it down first, or export a shorter take.
- Using Pause as a mark. Pause does not set start or end. Drag the region or type the clocks.
- Seeking on the wave, then pressing Play clip. Play clip ignores a mid-file seek and starts at the region start.
- Picking MP3 when the next app needs PCM. Use WAV, then encode later.
Suggested order of work
- Drop a file under 40 MB (MP3 or WAV if the browser is Safari).
- Wait until File and Clip clocks appear.
- Drag the region around the line that should remain, or type Start and End.
- Press Play clip. Adjust handles if the in or out is late.
- Download WAV for a clean copy, or MP3 for a smaller file.
- If a stock button is enough, use a soundboard instead of trimming.
Next step
Open the online audio trimmer, drop a clip, mark the region, and save WAV or MP3 on this device. For a button that is already cut, pick a board from the lists above rather than encoding a new file.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a phone refuse an OGG file?
The trimmer uses the browser decoder. Chrome and Firefox usually read OGG. Safari on iPhone often does not. Convert the file to MP3 or WAV, then drop it again.
What happens at the 40 MB limit?
Files over 40 MB are refused in the tab so decode and encode stay on the device. Split a long recording first, or export a shorter take from another app.
Does Reset remove the uploaded file?
No. Reset only stretches the shaded region back over the full duration and pauses playback. The file stays until a replacement is dropped.
Why is MP3 slower to save than WAV?
WAV writes uncompressed PCM in one pass. MP3 runs an encoder in the tab at 192 kbps, which takes longer on a long clip.
Is unsaved work kept after a refresh?
No. The trimmer does not store the file or the range. Refresh the page and the drop zone is empty again.
